Ryan is the assistant coach on our daughter's team, so he gets the inside scoop on what goes on in the dugout and on the field. There's one little girl with whom he had the following conversation while in the outfield:
Ryan - "If the ball comes to you, I want you to get it and run to second base" (pointing to second base)
Girl - "Where's second base?"
Ryan - "That one - right in front of you"
Girl - (points to third base) " That one over there"
Ryan - "No, this one....right in front of you"
He says he's told this particular girl about second base more than 5 times now.
Some of the younger girls had never swung a bat before. At the very first game, there was a tiny little blond girl, Evelyn, on the other team up to bat. The coaches gently encouraged her, "OK, Evelyn, get ready to swing your bat!" And as the coach pitched the ball across home plate, the girl's bat never reached a horizontal position. That's right - it stayed vertical as she rotated her body around. "Good swing, Evelyn, try again!"
Other notable moments:
- After running through home plate, a girl kept running to first again.
- Some girls twirl in the outfield.
- One prefers to sit in the outfield.
- One time, Ryan was coaching the catcher to 'tag' the girl who was running towards home. As the runner approached, the catcher threw the ball at the runner to 'tag' her.
It's so fun to watch.

ReplyDeleteDylan is playing t-ball for the first time this spring and this doesn't sound all that different than what goes on at the boys' fields ;) We have decided that t-ball is much more hilarious than soccer from an entertainment standpoint.
